  • Vision and energy are two woo-woo words. But, to me, they sum up the role of the Director. I’m responsible for crafting, protecting, and communicating the vision. Then, that vision has to be given the right energy in order for everyone involved to contribute their own expertise to the vision.

  • If it’s not well written, then there’s not a lot of hope for whatever it is. The words on the page and the direction around it are the foundation of the entire project, whether it’s a 15 second spot or a brand film. That’s why directing and writing are so intertwined — and why I love doing both.

Intro

Maybe it was fate I’d end up in the production world, sharing a name with a cartoon character. [I had the name first, ok ok]. Either way, it really started when my uncle taught me how to edit on a 1998 iMac G2 with the turquoise shell.

Exploration

16 years later, I finished university and fled to Florida, where I worked as a deckhand on a mega yacht. The goal? Set sail to the Mediterranean. Did that happen? No. 8 months later, I was still stuck in the Florida marsh. One wild night sent me to Vancouver, BC to work on a boat, where I cruised up and down BC for two years before drowning my savings on developing an iPhone app that peaked at 100 users. I was 25, and it was time for production.

Work

I’ve been an EP and director with eastcherry for 6 years. Building that company has been my sole focus for the +2190 days since its founding. Above all else, eastcherry has given me the gift of wearing every possible hat on a production. In that process, I’ve built an appreciation of the process itself. There’s a reason this art form takes so many people to paint, and I love making sure all of those people are welcomed, given space to create, and guided with good direction.

I’ve worked on a lot of projects. Here’s a still from 25 of them, where I was the director, DP, or EP:
